The statistics of the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI) for March and THY’s data for 2024 reveal that Turkey has come a long way in the aviation sector. Let’s take a look at the details together.
44 million people preferred air transportation in the first quarter of 2024
According to Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, 14.6 million passengers preferred air travel in March and approximately 44 million in the first quarter of the year. Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that this increase is an indicator of investments in technology and confidence in the sector.
In March, there were significant increases in the number of aircraft landing and taking off on domestic and international routes. There were 67 thousand 539 flights on domestic routes and 54 thousand 922 flights on international routes. Total flight traffic reached 165 thousand 329 including overflights.
Passenger traffic at airports was also remarkable in March. Domestic passenger traffic reached 6 million 587 thousand 526 and international passenger traffic reached 7 million 992 thousand 360. In total, 14 million 608 thousand 213 passengers were served. Compared to the same period of 2023, these figures correspond to an increase of 3.8 percent in domestic passenger traffic and 11.4 percent in international passenger traffic.
It is also stated that there has been a significant increase in freight traffic. In March, 58 thousand 801 tons of cargo was carried on domestic routes and 279 thousand 612 tons on international routes. Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen Airport also recorded significant figures. While 5 million 895 thousand 146 passengers were served at Istanbul Airport, 3 million 97 thousand 705 passengers passed through Sabiha Gökçen Airport.
THY’s data for 2024 is also quite remarkable
The number of passengers carried in March increased by 0.5 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and totaled 6.14 million passengers. The number of aircraft in THY’s fleet reached 453. While the number of outward transfer passengers increased by 3 percent in March period, passenger occupancy rate slightly decreased.
We clearly see that Turkey is growing rapidly and achieving significant successes in the aviation sector. Turkey’s airports and airline companies are continuously strengthening their infrastructure and improving their service quality in order to respond to the increasing demand.
